POSITION TITLE: Education Intern
PROGRAM: Marysville School District/ Jones Creek
Organization Background: Sound Salmon Solutions (SSS) is a local non-profit that works to restore salmon in the Stillaguamish, Snohomish and south Island County watersheds. We work towards this mission through implementing habitat restoration projects and providing community education and engagement. SSS hosts year round educational programs that vary depending on the season.
Position Description: During fall, winter, and spring SSS teach local area elementary through high school age students about water quality, erosion, macroinvertebrates, and habitat restoration concepts. The intern would assist with educating youth in both the classroom settings and on field trips. All curriculum SSS teaches is hands-on and focused on experiential learning. The majority of field lessons occur from Oct - Nov and Feb-June. The intern would be assisting with the lessons occurring in April and May of 2016.
There is potential for involvement in other aspects of our work depending on the intern’s area of interest, i.e. assisting with volunteer events.
Hands-on teaching experience with youth, and potentially adults
Teaching both in a classroom and outside in the field
Familiarity with how a small nonprofits operates
Networking with environmental professionals
Increase knowledge of PNW salmonids, habitat requirements, and water quality concerns
Internship Details: The minimum need for the internship is approximately 8-10 weeks during April and May 2016, with the potential for a longer internship as needed. The intern is expected to be available to teach 10-20 hours per week; we will work with student to set schedule that works best for the program needs and as the intern’s schedule allows. Most of the education programs occur Monday- Thursday from 8:00am-3:00pm. The internship is unpaid, but a mileage per diem will be available to assist in offsetting the cost of driving to and from the office located in Lake Stevens, WA.
Current driver’s license, clean driving record, and dependable transportation (must be able to get to SSS office in Lake Stevens)
At least 18 years old
Ability to work effectively independently or on a team
Ability to lift up to 50lbs safely
Able to work outside in all weather conditions, often over uneven ground
Submit to and pass a background check for working with children
Have a flexible schedule and able to work weekdays
Demonstrated interest in outdoor education, environmental stewardship, and/or early childhood education
Comfortable speaking and interacting with people of diverse backgrounds and languages
Effective written & oral communication skills
Prior knowledge/ interest in the recovery of Pacific NW salmonids and their habitat requirements
